REVISED - JUNE 2009

This is an archived version of Dan Koeppel’s old stairway website. It contains some old (but still good) routes, some publicity info, and other stuff.

welcome stair-walkers !

If you made it, the site still works, though there may be updates, so feel free to email me at silverlakestairs at gmail.com for info...

...and please keep reading to learn about my best-selling book, “BANANA: The Fate of the Fruit that Changed The World.”

If you came here after viewing Jane Monreal’s report on KABC, you might also want to read the LA Times article,

NEWS - JUNE 2009

New routes are coming! The “Killer” (Silverlake/Echo Park) version has been updated and corrected, with more stairs added...for a total of 68 stairways.
The older version - at 18 miles - is also available. (If you plan to do the older version, you might want to download the newer one, too, as it contains more accurate stair/mileage counts, as well as some correct turns.)

BIG THINGS ARE COMING. My stair list is now up to 140 stairways. Google Earth/Maps versions are complete and almost ready for public distribution.
PUBLIC STAIRWALKS. There’s contact info at the bottom of this page.

there are three routes available, but before you download them, some sucky crap that I’ve been forced to include.

1) These routes are free, but they are copyrighted and the property of me, Dan Koeppel.

2) You can distribute them to anyone you want, as long as you do not sell or profit from them.

3) You cannot reproduce them without giving me credit. That said, I encourage you to reproduce them, expand upon them, modify them, correct them, and do anything else to them. But please give me credit if you’re using my raw material.

4) Repeating myself: Please don’t shoplift my routes for your commercial hiking guide or travel story without asking me first. It isn’t that I don’t want the world to know about the stairs. I do. But I want it to also be understood that this isn’t just a “funky” walk in Los Angeles. The stairs are an important community and historic resource, and the routes are the product of years of hard work. The routes are public and free because the stairs are public and free. If you want to sell a stairway walk, use my list, head out there, and come up with your own. You’ll have fun.

5) If you don’t care about or understand item four, remember that the routes are copyrighted material.

By going on to the download page, you agree to the above.

and....

...about the banana picture:

I have a new book out and it is really interesting. When you are tired and recovering from the stair walk, you should read it. Please visit my main site and learn why bananas might be disappearing from the face of the earth. (really.)

you can visit my
website here.

You can find contact info for me there, too, as well as in the downloadable stair lists. I lead semi-regular walks for all levels; get in touch with me for more info. I’ve got other variations on the walks, ranging from six to eleven miles, in both Echo Park and Silverlake, as well. Contact me if you’re interested.

The stair lists are free, but they are copyrighted. That means you can give them to anybody you like. You can put them on your website. But you can't sell them or do anything commercial with them.

For more stairs, try to pick up “Stairway Walks in Los Angeles,” by Adah Bakalinsky and Larry Gordon; the book is out of print, but you can find it at the library.

thanks for your visit.
